A Vegetarian Diet Can Reduce your Shopping Costs

Did you know a vegetarian diet can reduce your shopping bill?

You’ll probably have already noticed that meat products in the supermarket are more expensive than vegetables. Red meat, such as steak, is particularly pricey, as are certain kinds of seafood.

Cheaper meat products, like sausages, tend to be of a lower quality, or they won’t be as healthy.

There’s no doubt that vegetables are cheaper than meat, and switching to a vegetarian diet can help you to save significantly on your weekly shopping bill.

Here are some key areas to work on in order to stay healthy and save money whilst on a vegetarian diet:

Grown your own

You can save big money by growing your own vegetables, herbs and fruits. In fact, depending on the type and amount you grow, you can save a significant amount of money. For example; by spending a few pounds on seeds, plants, and supplies in spring, you’ll produce vegetables that will yield pounds of produce in summer.

Local Shopping

Why not check out your local greengrocer or farm shop rather than the supermarket for your veg. This way you can purchase exact quantities of what you want, reducing your food waste and your shopping bill.

Buy in Season

Buying in-season produce is an easy way of maximizing the nutritional benefit of your food while minimizing the cost. Seasonal fruit and veg tend to be fresh and therefore contain a higher amount of vitamins and minerals.

Seasonal fruit and veg also tends to be locally produced, so choosing to eat seasonally supports local and sustainable farmers. This can also minimize the environmental impact of your food shop.

Tops Day Nurseries

Tops Day Nurseries believe in an environmentally sustainable and socially responsible world for all. We aim to achieve this through educating the children of today, so that they, in turn, can influence the way future generations live. One way we can do this is by the food we prepare and give to our children.

At Tops, our menus are designed to ensure the children have a fully balanced diet with all meals and desserts having reduced sugar. We have also introduced vegan and vegetarian meals to our menus which are available every week. Not only do these vegan and vegetarian meals provide the children with all the right nutrients but they are also much better for the environment and cost effective which is in keeping with our vision, to maximise the social and environmental outcomes for children, learners, colleagues and the community while being financially sustainable.
