Artificial Grass in Nurseries: Why We’re Choosing Natural Outdoor Spaces for Children

At Tops Day Nurseries, we believe children learn best when they can connect with nature. Whether they are digging in soil, spotting insects or exploring different plants, time outdoors encourages curiosity, creativity and a lifelong appreciation for the environment.

As part of our commitment to sustainability, we regularly review the materials and environments we use across our nurseries. Every setting is unique, so any decisions we make need to balance children’s safety, accessibility, practicality and environmental impact.

One topic that has received increasing attention is the use of artificial grass.

Understanding the environmental considerations

Artificial grass is a practical solution for some outdoor spaces. It is durable, stays green all year round and can cope well with heavy use. However, research suggests there are also environmental factors worth considering.

As artificial grass ages, it can release tiny plastic particles known as microplastics into the surrounding environment. Some synthetic turf products have also been found to contain PFAS, often referred to as “forever chemicals”, although this varies between manufacturers.

Unlike natural grass, artificial surfaces do not support biodiversity. Living lawns provide habitats for worms, insects and microorganisms that help keep soil healthy and provide food for birds and pollinators. Plastic grass cannot offer these same benefits.

Natural planting also plays an important role in absorbing rainwater and helping to regulate temperatures. Research has shown that artificial grass can become much hotter than natural grass during warm weather, making it less comfortable to use on sunny days.

Every nursery is different

No two Tops nurseries are the same. Some have large gardens with plenty of natural planting, while others have smaller outdoor spaces where practical considerations influence the types of surfaces used.

Where improvements are made, we consider a range of factors including sustainability, safety, maintenance, accessibility and creating the best possible environment for children.

Bringing more nature into play

Where space allows, we aim to include features that help children experience the natural world. This might include trees, wildflowers, sensory planting, bark play areas, vegetable gardens and natural materials for imaginative play.

These spaces encourage exploration while supporting local wildlife and biodiversity.

Our sustainability journey

Sustainability is about making thoughtful choices and continually looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact.

At Tops Day Nurseries, this includes working towards Net Zero, planting trees, reducing waste and creating outdoor environments that help children develop a meaningful connection with nature.

Every nursery is different, but our goal remains the same. We want children to enjoy outdoor spaces that inspire learning, support wellbeing and nurture a love of the natural world.
