We are excited to announce that Tops Day Nurseries has now invested in bamboo toothbrushes for the children to use, supporting our ethos as a green, sustainable company. Tops will not be buying any more plastic toothbrushes for the children.
Millions of plastic toothbrushes end up in landfill every day and this will only get worse with population due to rise from 7 billion to 9 billion in the next few years, so there is now a move away from using plastic unless we need it to last for ever.
Bamboo is the world’s fastest naturally renewing resource which is also inherently anti-microbial, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. The soft bristles are BPA-free, 100% biodegradable and teeth can be cleaned effectively without damaging enamel.
Tops Day Nurseries introduced a tooth brushing scheme into each nursery in 2016 in support Public Health England’s recommendation All children taking part in the programme brush their teeth at the setting at least once per day using fluoride toothpaste. Children are taught how to brush their teeth effectively and independently, whilst monitoring the length of time they are brushing their teeth (2 minutes).
Cheryl Hadland, Managing Director at Tops Day Nurseries said “Since the tooth brushing scheme launched last year, the interest shown in the programme has been very strong, so we wanted to continue with the toothbrushing but to find a more sustainable way to do this with the children. We have already stopped buying one use plastic aprons, gloves, crockery and cutlery. We also stopped buying balloons, and very recently stopped buying glitter and sequins (micro-plastics). Its been a big change for us, but one we see as necessary if we are to be responsible for providing the best preparation for children to live in a health, sustainable world into the future.”
The new child-sized tooth brushes will be used within all 28 nurseries across the south coast. A small quantity will also be made available to buy from the nursery office at £1.99 each. (We are hoping to put an on-line shop onto our Facebook or website shortly for your convenience) and the brushes are also available at most health food shops and we expect them to be in supermarkets soon!
