From 9th to 15th June, Team Green Britain Bike Week encourages people across the UK to think about how cycling can be a part of everyday life. At Tops Day Nurseries, we’re passionate about sustainability, children’s wellbeing, and promoting healthier lifestyles — and cycling fits beautifully with all three.
Cycling is more than just a way to get from A to B — it supports children’s development by helping them build balance, coordination, and confidence from a young age. For families, it’s a fun, screen-free way to get outside, connect with each other, and introduce children to healthy habits early on.
It’s also a brilliant eco-friendly alternative to short car journeys. Swapping the car for a bike even just once or twice a week can help reduce air pollution, cut carbon emissions, and save money on fuel.
Budget-Friendly and Eco-Conscious Bike Options:
You don’t need to spend a fortune to get started. There are many affordable and sustainable options available, including:
- Balance bikes – A great choice for toddlers to build confidence without pedals.
- Second-hand bikes – Local buy/sell groups, charity shops, and community cycling schemes often have well-maintained bikes for a fraction of the cost.
- Scooters and ride-ons – For younger children, these are fun stepping stones into cycling and still help reduce car use.
- Bike-sharing schemes – In some areas, families can access low-cost or free bikes through local council or community initiatives.
Teaching children to enjoy cycling from a young age not only supports their physical and mental wellbeing, but also introduces them to a more planet-friendly way of thinking. It’s a win-win for families and the environment.
This Bike Week, we’re encouraging our Tops families to think about how cycling or scooting could fit into their routine ,whether it’s riding to the shops, heading to nursery, or just enjoying a family outing in the fresh air.
Every little ride makes a big difference.
