Celebrating Pride: Creating Inclusive Spaces in Our Nurseries

As we approach Pride month, we want to take a moment to discuss why we choose to celebrate Pride in our nursery and the importance of this celebration to our community.

At Tops, we believe in creating a nurturing environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and celebrated for who they are.  Pride is more than just a parade or a celebration; it’s a movement rooted in love, acceptance, and equality for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or family structure.

Pride Supports Us in Celebrating Diversity:

Our world comprises people from diverse backgrounds, identities, and experiences, representing all walks of life. Additionally, by celebrating, we honour this diversity and teach children to embrace and respect differences. We believe that exposing children to a variety of perspectives from a young age helps cultivate empathy, compassion, and acceptance.

Every child deserves to feel seen, heard and accepted for who they are. By celebrating, we create a safe and inclusive space where children from LGBTQ+ families feel valued and accepted. We want all children and their families to know that they are welcome here, no matter their makeup or background.

Above all Pride is a message of love – love for oneself and love for others. We teach children that love takes many forms and that everyone deserves to love and be loved without fear or discrimination. After all, we hope to instil in them values of kindness, acceptance, and empathy that will guide them throughout their lives.

Even at a young age, children can begin to learn about concepts like diversity, equality, and human rights. By incorporating age-appropriate discussions and activities related to Pride, we empower children to become advocates for inclusion and social justice.

By participating in Pride celebrations, we join a larger community of families, educators, and allies who share our commitment to diversity and equality. Moreover, we want our nursery to be a place where families feel supported and connected. Here, they can celebrate their identities and share their stories without fear of judgment.

Whilst we understand that some parents may have personal biases or judgments regarding Pride and the LGBTQ+ community. We want to assure you that we respect and value your perspectives; however, it’s important to note that our commitment to celebrating Pride and promoting LGBTQ+ acceptance will continue regardless of differing views.  Our goal is to create a space where everyone feels heard, supported, and included.
