Childcare Support Expansion in 2025: What You Need to Know

In September 2025, the UK government will fully expand its childcare support, offering eligible working parents 30 hours per week for children under 5. This support extension of the current offer aims to make childcare more accessible and affordable for working families, helping them balance professional and family life.

What’s Changing?

The existing 15-hour support for 3-4-year-olds will remain, but with the new policy, parents of younger children will also be eligible for additional support. By 2025, families with children from 9 months to 5 years old will be able to benefit from 30 hours of childcare, providing increased flexibility.

Eligibility Criteria for the Childcare support expansion:

To qualify, both parents in the household must work at least 16 hours per week at the National Minimum or Living Wage, though exceptions may apply for families on maternity or paternity leave. Those with an annual income exceeding £100,000 will not be eligible for this additional support.

The changes will be rolled out gradually, beginning with working parents of 2-year-olds in April 2024, followed by parents of children aged 9 months to 3 years in September 2024. Full implementation, where parents of all children under 5 can claim 30 hours, will take place in September 2025.

For many parents, the 30 hours of childcare per week will help ease the financial burden of childcare costs. The phased rollout gives parents the flexibility to plan ahead while ensuring childcare providers can handle the increased demand.

How to Apply for the Childcare support expansion?

To access these hours, parents must meet certain criteria, including work hours and income limits. For more details, visit the government’s Childcare Choices website to confirm eligibility and explore the registration process.
