At Tops Day Nurseries, we love encouraging little ones to be active, and The Big Walk and Wheel is the perfect way to do just that! This fun-filled initiative, organised by Sustrans, is all about inspiring children and their families to ditch the car and choose more sustainable ways to travel, like walking, scooting, or cycling.
What Is The Big Walk and Wheel?
The Big Walk and Wheel is the UK’s largest inter-school walking, scooting, and cycling challenge, running for two weeks every year. The goal is to get as many children as possible travelling actively to school or nursery instead of using cars. Not only does this help keep kids fit, but it also reduces pollution and helps protect our planet!
Why Is It Important?
Active travel has so many benefits for children, families, and the environment:
Healthier Bodies – Walking, scooting, or cycling keeps children active, boosting their fitness and well-being.
A Greener Planet – Fewer cars mean less air pollution, helping to create cleaner air for everyone.
Happier Minds – Exercise is great for mental health, improving mood and concentration.
How Can You Get Involved?
Joining in is easy! Here are some ways you and your little one can take part in The Big Walk and Wheel:
+ Walk to Nursery – If you live close by, try walking instead of driving.
+ Scoot or Cycle – If your child has a scooter or bike, use it for part or all of the journey.
+ Park & Stride – If you have to drive, park a little further away and walk the rest of the way.
At Tops Day Nurseries, we encourage all families to take part in this fantastic initiative. It’s a great way to build healthy habits, spend quality time together, and do your bit for the environment. Let’s get moving and make a difference! Will you be taking part? Let us know how your family is choosing to travel actively!
