We’re going on a bear hunt at Tops Winchester

The staff at Tops Winchester, based at Royal Hampshire County Hospital enhanced children’s imagination by re-creating the classic story ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’ by Michael Rosen, in the nursery.

The well-loved story was recited by staff and children, who had lots of fun going through the long wavy grass,  thick oozy mud, swirling whirling snowstorm and splish-sploshing through the river before eventually reaching the narrow gloomy cave… but they were not scared!

Staff set up this brilliant activity after the children showed particular interest in the story around Christmas time.

2016 marked a special anniversary of this much-loved picture book, it has been enjoyed by children for 25 years! We think it is safe to say the story was very much enjoyed by the children at Tops Winchester… and the staff too!

Storytelling can have the corresponding result of increasing a child’s concentration and imagination. When a story is told with sound effects, actions and sensory experiences, it inspires children’s responses and makes them really keen to listen, speak, write and draw.

Storytelling and reading are not the only way Tops Day Nursery implements literacy into early years, click here to see more examples of the fun-filled activities we provide to support little learners with their literacy skills.
