The ‘Great Big Green Week’ is the UK’s biggest ever celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.
What is it?
Between the 24th of September and the 2nd of October this year, Great Big Green Week will unleash a wave of support for action to protect the planet. Tens of thousands of people in every corner of the country will celebrate the heartfelt, brave, everyday actions being taken to stand up for nature and fight climate change.
National organisations, institutions, businesses and media outlets all join in, getting more people involved up and down the country, and putting pressure on the UK Government to up its game on climate change.
What takes place?
Great Big Green Week 2021 saw bat walks and bake offs, festivals and football matches, murals, MPs in EVs, seaweed foraging and school assemblies. and everything in between. These events were hosted by teachers, bus drivers, sport clubs, artists, community groups, places of worship, builders – anyone who cares about climate change.
Why is this Important?
We are seeing the impacts of extreme weather events caused by climate change on the people and places we love both here in the UK and abroad. The time is now to do everything we can to protect them. Climate change is the fight of our lifetime.
Last year, the UK hosted a major UN climate summit, known as COP26, in Glasgow this November. We came out of this summit with a big to-do list, and we need to show our Government that the public wants to see them deliver on their promises to protect the planet for now and future generations.
What are we doing at Tops?
At Tops, we believe in an environmentally sustainable and socially responsible world for all. We aim to achieve this through educating the children of today, so that they, in turn, can influence the way future generations live. We have spent the last week celebrating Great Big Green week, by setting up activities to teach children about climate change and the effects it has on the planet.
Keep an eye on our blog to find out what we got up to!
Letters to Tomorrow
As part of this year’s Great Big Green Week, we’re asking everyone to write Letters to Tomorrow. These letters explain your hopes for future generations if our leaders step up to protect the environment and your fears about what life could be like if we don’t slow down climate change. Every ‘letter of the day’ is sent to the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition today, to remind them to put climate on their agenda every single day.

Our Sustainability Awards
We were the first nursery chain in the UK to achieve B Corp certification and as such with all our decisions we take into consideration our environmental and social impacts to ensure it is transparent and ethical. We were also recently awarded a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development. A prestigious award that recognises our excellence in developing sustainably, and for genuinely driving change in the early years sector.
What can you do to get involved?
Last year, 5,000 events took place during the Great Big Green Week, the biggest event for climate and nature ever in the UK. But the campaign to protect people and the planet does not stop there.
Help us make this year Greater, Bigger and Greener by organising an event in your area. Click the links below to get involved.
