Bournemouth based company, Hadland Care Group, are committing to a better environment for our future by taking part in the Green Positive Environmental Action (PEA) scheme. On Thursday 3rd March Cheryl Hadland, Managing Director, was presented with a certificate denoting their achievement towards the third stage out of five.
The company, which owns Tops Day Nurseries, Aspire Training Team and Reside Care Homes, started working with Green PEA six months ago in a bid to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions. The first milestone was to undertake an energy usage survey and also obtain a letter of support from the senior management team.
“Having support from our team of directors was a crucial part to starting our journey with Green PEA,” comments Cheryl. “Without the managers understanding why we are working towards this goal, it would have been impossible for us to encourage our employees to also buy-in to the project.”
In order for the team to achieve their third certificate, this level of staff engagement was vital. “With over 500 employees across the group, we needed to have a clear and concise policy for them to be able to read and digest in the best way,” explains Cheryl. “We have therefore re-written our Environmental Policy to include specific references to actively conserving energy, and this will be an agenda topic at all staff meetings moving forward where we can not only explain the next steps to our employees but actively involve them in the decision making by asking for their feedback.”
Examples of how Hadland Care Group have already started to see savings is through their use of printing and heating systems. “Following our initial energy usage survey there were certain areas where we could see some very quick wins from small alterations,” continues Cheryl. “Seeing results already come in from changes the sites have made is growing their support even further. The next step in terms of implementations is to fit fuel-saving magnets to the gas boilers across our nurseries and care homes.”

Cheryl concludes, “With two more certificates to work towards there is a lot more we can be doing, and want to be doing.
