Tops Day Nurseries Havant have recently achieved the Plastic Free Schools title and are the first early years setting in the UK to do so!

Having already been recognised as one of the South’s leading eco-sustainable childcare providers, Tops Havant worked towards 5 objectives in order to gain their new accreditation, which was implemented by Surfers against Sewage.

As the UK’s first plastic free nursery, Tops Havant have pledged to remove at least three single-use plastics in the nursery day, organise at least two ‘Trash Mobs’ per year, and continue to inspire and educate the Tops Day Nurseries family to eliminate single-use plastics from their lives.

Barbara Chaitoff, Nursery Manager said “I am so proud of how much hard work everyone has put in to support the nursery in establishing itself as the first to achieve plastic free status through Surfers Against Sewage – Plastic Free Schools Programme.

Protecting our environment is something we endorse throughout the Tops Day Nurseries family, and is a passion of my own, so to be able to hold the plastic free status is fantastic.

We have already organised a number of beach cleans and activities to educate children on becoming environmentally sustainable, and look forward to making a difference to the world, our world, one toddler step at a time.”

As well as organising beach cleans, banishing single-use plastic and writing to top brands to learn more about their packaging waste, Tops Havant have also raised the issue to local MP Alan Mak.

A representative from Surfers Against Sewage said “Tops Havant has been innovative in adapting the programme to their specific situation, as the programme was initially designed for schools, not nurseries. We hope more nurseries follow Tops Day Nurseries lead and take on the Plastic Free challenge!”
