When your little one hits that massive milestone of their first birthday you might find that their easy two nap schedule suddenly isn’t working as well as it was. They might be fighting their second nap or end up with the nap finishing too close to bedtime resulting in late bedtimes, or perhaps some early morning wake ups have crept in.
Now, they might be showing signs that they’re ready for one nap, when they’re actually not quite ready and this transition from two to one nap is unlikely to happen overnight. You might find that initially you have five days that are two nap days and then two that are one nap days and then that drops and shifts to being more like two days they have two naps and five days you’re on one nap. You may also find that it’s nursery days that are just the one nap and then days at home and/or over the weekend that end up being the two nap days when you can be a bit flexible with your schedule.

Hopefully, when you’re on two naps your little one will already be having a short morning nap and then a longer afternoon nap. Having a longer afternoon nap is important because that is the nap you will hold on to and that nap also ensures that your little one is not overtired when going to bed.
That morning nap can be cut shorter and shorter until it’s only 10 – 15 minutes to get them to their lunchtime nap. (This is where you may find it easier to hold on to that short nap on non-nursery days as it can be in the car/pram and if it doesn’t happen you know you can push through to the lunchtime nap).
When you feel that it is time to make the transition, speak with your key person about capping the morning nap and set a deadline as to when if they haven’t gone down for a morning nap to push through to lunch time.
