Receiving a King’s Award for Enterprise is one of the highest honours a UK organisation can achieve. For Tops Day Nurseries, earning this prestigious recognition is an incredible milestone, but what makes the achievement even more remarkable is what happened behind the scenes at the official King’s Award reception at St James’s Palace.
Here’s a look inside this unforgettable evening through Sandy Kemish lens and why it reinforces just how exceptional this achievement is for Tops Day Nurseries.
An Evening at St James’s Palace
The evening began with arrival at St James’s Palace in London, where guests gathered from 5:30pm before entering the palace following security and identification checks.
Walking through the historic palace and into its private gardens, guests were welcomed to an exclusive reception celebrating recipients of The King’s Awards for Enterprise.
Around 200 guests attended, including:
- Members of the King’s Award judging panel
- The King’s Awards Office team
- Lord-Lieutenants from across the United Kingdom
- Award-winning businesses representing a wide range of industries
The Lord-Lieutenants, who serve as His Majesty The King’s personal representatives across each region of the UK, will personally present the award to every winning organisation over the coming months.
Throughout the evening, many expressed genuine admiration for the work being achieved at Tops Day Nurseries and our commitment to creating a more sustainable future for early years education.
A Truly Exceptional Achievement
Speaking with fellow award winners revealed just how competitive the King’s Awards for Enterprise really are.
Many businesses shared that they had applied multiple times over several years before finally being successful.
That made Tops Day Nurseries’ achievement even more significant.
Not only did we receive a King’s Award for Enterprise on our very first application, but we also achieved the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2022 on our first attempt.
Receiving the UK’s highest business honour twice at the first attempt is an incredible accomplishment and reflects the dedication, innovation and passion shown by every colleague across the organisation.

Meeting HRH The Princess Royal
One of the highlights of the evening came when HRH The Princess Royal (Princess Anne) made her way through the gardens.
After being introduced to several groups, one of her assistants invited our representative to meet Her Royal Highness.
During the conversation, Princess Anne showed genuine interest in Tops Day Nurseries, asking about:
- What we do
- Our sustainability initiatives
- Where our nurseries are located
She also mentioned having spent time in Sandbanks, Poole earlier that day before continuing to another official engagement.
It was a memorable conversation and a privilege to share the story of Tops Day Nurseries with Her Royal Highness.
The Honour of Meeting His Majesty King Charles III
Later in the evening, His Majesty King Charles III moved through the reception, meeting groups of award recipients.
After being invited forward by the King’s Private Secretary, our representative was formally introduced to His Majesty.
There was an opportunity to shake hands with The King and discuss Tops Day Nurseries, our work, and our commitment to sustainability.
The King was warm, relaxed and engaging throughout the reception, taking time to speak with every group he met. His approachable manner immediately put everyone at ease, making the experience both memorable and inspiring.
The reception concluded shortly after 7:30pm as His Majesty departed for his next engagement.
What It Really Takes to Win a King’s Award for Enterprise
One particularly insightful conversation took place with a representative from The King’s Awards Office, who explained the rigorous process every application must successfully complete before an award is granted.
The process includes several stages:
1. Initial Application Review
The information declared within the application is compared against the organisation’s public presence, including its website and supporting evidence.
If the application does not accurately reflect the organisation, it does not proceed any further.
2. Expert Judging
Applications are reviewed by specialists with expertise in the relevant sector.
They carefully assess whether each business genuinely demonstrates excellence worthy of a King’s Award.
Successful applicants are then shortlisted.
3. Government Due Diligence
Every shortlisted business undergoes extensive due diligence.
Around 50 government departments carry out checks covering compliance, governance and business practices.
Many businesses are shortlisted but do not pass this stage.
Only organisations that successfully complete every level of scrutiny receive a King’s Award for Enterprise.
Knowing the depth of these checks makes Tops Day Nurseries’ achievement even more meaningful and demonstrates the strength, integrity and high standards maintained across the organisation.

Ending a Memorable Day in London
After leaving the reception around 7:45pm, the walk back along The Mall provided a fitting end to an unforgettable day.
Passing Horse Guards Parade, military bands were performing a concert featuring music from well-loved musicals, creating a truly special atmosphere in the heart of London.
It was the perfect conclusion to a day celebrating innovation, sustainability and excellence alongside some of the UK’s most inspiring organisations.
A Proud Moment for Everyone at Tops Day Nurseries
Receiving the King’s Award for Enterprise is recognition of far more than one evening at St James’s Palace.
It celebrates the dedication of every colleague, the trust of every family, and our continued commitment to delivering outstanding early years education while leading the way in sustainability.
Winning this prestigious honour, especially on our first application, following the success of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2022, is something everyone connected with Tops Day Nurseries can be incredibly proud of.
As we look ahead, this achievement inspires us to continue raising standards, innovating within the early years sector, and creating a better future for children, families and our communities.
