How to make play dough

Tops Day Nurseries would like to share the popular activities we provide at nursery that you can easily re-create at home for children to enjoy.

One of the children’s favourite activities here at Tops is making play dough. They love to be involved in the making process, it makes it all the more fun to play with afterwards!  This is a quick and easy activity that will keep children entertained for hours.

What you will need:

  • 4 cups of flour
  • 1 ½ cups salt
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 cup water
  • Food colouring

Firstly, ask your child to help you measure out the ingredients, having everything ready and to hand for when the making starts. Children have shown an interest in weighing and measuring ingredients during Tops Cooking School.

Once all the ingredients have been measured, mix together the flour and the salt.

In a separate bowl, mix together ½ cup of warm water with a few drops of your chosen food colouring. You could also divide the water into multiple bowls and use different food colouring if you plan to make more than one colour.

Slowly pour the water into the flour mixture, stirring as you pour. Stir until combined, then knead with your hands until the flour is completely absorbed.

This kneading part is a great sensory activity for children as they are able to feel the texture change from a crumbly, wet mixture to soft play dough.

To keep the play dough from hardening, put the dough in a zip lock bag and keep it in the fridge.

We would love to see your creations, please feel to email us at marketing@hadlandcaregroup.co.uk for a chance for your child’s masterpiece to feature in the next Tops Magazine!
