Helping Your Child Step Into School Life

Starting school is a big step for children and families. At Tops Day Nurseries, we see this as a time for celebration, not stress. Rather than focusing on being “school ready,” we talk about helping children feel confident, curious, and capable as they take this exciting next step in their learning journey.

Every child develops in their own time and in their own way, and there’s no checklist they need to complete to “be ready.” What matters most is that they feel secure, supported, and understood at home and in their early years setting.

What Does a Positive Transition Look Like?

Children who make a smooth, confident move into school often:

  • Feel comfortable being independent in small ways (e.g., putting on their coat, using the toilet)
  • Can express their feelings and needs to trusted adults
  • Are used to being part of a group and taking turns
  • Show curiosity, imagination, and resilience in their play

These skills come naturally through play, routine, connection, and loving guidance.

How You Can Support This Transition at Home

Here are some gentle, practical ways to help your child build confidence ahead of starting school:

Encourage everyday independence

Let your child practise putting on their shoes, opening lunchboxes, or hanging up their coat. Celebrate effort, not perfection!

Talk about what to expect

Chat positively about the friends they might make, the fun they’ll have, and the things they’ll explore. Keep it light and age-appropriate.

Share stories about starting school

Books like Starting School by Janet and Allan Ahlberg or Come to School Too, Blue Kangaroo! by Emma Chichester Clark can help open conversation and ease anxiety.

Keep routines calm and familiar

A steady daily rhythm helps children feel safe and in control. Things like regular meals, bedtime stories, and free play are incredibly grounding.

Prioritise play and wellbeing

Free play builds thinking skills, emotional regulation, language, and creativity, all essential foundations for learning.

A Gentle Note on Emotions

It’s normal for children and parents to feel a mix of excitement and nerves. Let your child know it’s okay to feel unsure. Reassure them you’ll be there to listen and support them as they take each step.

EYFS Links: Lifelong Learning Starts Here

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) encourages a holistic, child-centred approach to learning. Through play and everyday interactions, children develop:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development – resilience, empathy, self-regulation
  • Communication and Language – confidence to share thoughts and feelings
  • Physical Development – self-care, coordination, fine motor skills
These are the real building blocks of a successful transition into school life.
