Sustainability

At Tops, our Vision is “To maximise the social and environmental outcomes for children, learners, colleagues, and the community while being financially sustainable”. Below you can find out more about how Tops Portsmouth engages with a number of projects to support this vision.

Winning a Queens Award

We were awarded a Queens Award for Enterprise for our excellence in Sustainable Development, we’re not just keeping up; we’re driving real change across the sector. From banning glitter in all our nurseries to tackle microplastic pollution, to saying a firm no to single-use plastics like cling film, food bags, aprons, and wet wipes, we’re committed to making a difference every day.

We’re proud to be the first nursery group in the UK to achieve Green Flag certifications at every setting and the first to earn B Corp certification, proving that business can be a force for good. Our team is out front, speaking at national events and championing new ideas, while our role as founding sponsors of the APPG for Early Years Education puts us at the heart of sector innovation. And with reusable nappies in every nursery, we’re slashing landfill waste and showing what’s possible when you put sustainability first.

At Tops, we don’t just talk about change, we make it happen, setting trends and raising the bar for a greener future.

Check Out Our Sustainability Travel Plan

We implement a sustainable travel plan for each setting to promote healthy lifestyles, improve staff morale, enhance recruitment and retention of staff, to reduce parking requirements on the surrounding roads, achieve the minimum number of additional single-occupancy car traffic and movements to and from site.

Tops Have become the first Day Nurseries in the UK to Achieve 6 Corp Certification

B Corporation (or B. Corp) are businesses that live the highest social and environmental standards for people and the planet. Tops were assessed and audited
against demanding standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency.

There are currently over 3,500 B. Corps in 150
industries and 70 countries across the globe and Tops Day Nurseries has become the first Day Nursery in the UK to become a certified B. Corp Corporation
business.

Our Famous Menus

At Tops, our menus are designed to provide children with a balanced, nutritious diet, with all meals and desserts made using no added sugar. We offer vegan and vegetarian options every week and have recently introduced venison – a lean, iron-rich meat that supports healthy development. We ensure that we cater to all dietary needs to make sure our mealtimes are fun and inclusive for all.

We aim to promote a positive relationship with food from a young age, encouraging children to enjoy a variety of healthy choices and grow in independence from the opportunity we give them to serve their own food up. Our close partnership with Harvest Fine Foods ensures we use fresh, locally sourced ingredients daily, supporting both nutrition and sustainability.
