Every July, millions of people around the world take part in Plastic Free July. It is a global movement that encourages individuals, businesses and communities to reduce their reliance on single use plastic and aims for a more eco-friendly, sustainable future. Here is how you can join us at Tops Day Nurseries to make a positive impact this month.

What is Plastic Free July?

Plastic Free July is an empowering movement to remind us about the negative consequences plastic can have on the environment. It challenges us to rethink our habits, make more sustainable choices, and commit to simple swaps that can reduce/eliminate our plastic usage. The items we use, like plastic straws, bags and bottles, contribute to the growing problem of climate change and pollute our oceans, potentially harming wildlife. However, by participating in Plastic Free July, we can take simple steps towards reducing the amount of plastic used and ensuring we create a cleaner, healthier planet for the further generations.

How is Tops Day Nurseries getting involved?

At Tops, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to recycling and reusing materials whenever we can, minimising the amount of waste we produce and extending the life of the resources used. As an eco-friendly nursery, we are constantly seeking plastic alternatives and what can be used instead. For example, we have switched to reusable nappies and biodegradable wipes, reducing our reliance on single-use plastics. By making these alternative choices, we are striving to create a healthier, greener planet for our children and future generations. To ensure these beliefs are shown, we create activities for our children that emphasise the importance of sustainability, such as nature walks, recycling projects, and crafting with reusable materials.

How can you help?

Joining the Plastic Free July challenge is not only simple but rewarding. Here are some ways you can ensure you are doing the best you can for the planet:

  • Start with simple swaps: you can start by replacing everyday single use plastic items with reusable ones. For example, you can bring your own shopping bags, use a reusable water bottle and coffee cup, say no to plastic straws and cutlery.
  • Assess your waste: take a look at the amount of plastic you use each day or week and see what can be replaced or eliminated.
  • Get others involved: encourage family, friends, schools, or workplaces to join in the plastic free July movement. You could host a plastic free lunch, create workshops, or even share your journey on social media.
  • Support plastic free businesses: you can shop at local bulk food stores, farmers markets, or businesses that offer low waste and plastic free options.

Plastic Free July is a lot more than a month-long movement that everyone should participate in. By making these small changes in our daily routines, we can make a significant impact on the environment. At Tops Day Nurseries, we are proud to lead by example and support the community within this initiative.
