When it comes to protecting our planet, recycling is a great start. However, at Tops Day Nurseries, we go further. We believe the best way to reduce waste is to stop it before it’s created. This means thinking differently, making bold choices, and showing children that sometimes the kindest thing we can do for the planet is to simply use less.

Rethinking Uniforms
One way we’ve taken action is through our uniform recycling policy. Instead of throwing old uniforms away, we find new ways to use them.
We partnered with The Salvation Army to give our uniforms a second life. This not only prevents waste but also supports families in need. Every year, around 350,000 tonnes of clothing ends up in landfill, releasing harmful gases as it breaks down. By removing logos and donating the clothes to a Salvation Army collection point, we help raise funds for vital support services—from daily meals and social care to emergency help for those struggling.
As a result, this decision reduces textile waste, lowers carbon emissions, and sets an example for children. It shows that “new” is not always necessary, and sometimes the most sustainable choice is to care for what we already own.
Waste-Free Kitchens at Tops
Our nurseries serve thousands of meals and snacks every week, all cooked with love, care, and balance. But just as important, we think carefully about how those meals are served.
By switching to washable crockery and cutlery, and reducing single-use packaging, our kitchens are cutting waste dramatically. In fact, many parents tell us that this inspires them to rethink their own kitchens too. From swapping cling film for reusable wraps to packing lunches in eco-friendly tubs, small changes really add up.

Family-Friendly Ways to Reduce Waste at Home
We know family life is busy, and going “zero waste” can feel overwhelming. Nevertheless, small steps can lead to big results. Here are some simple swaps to try at home:
- Sharing economy: Pass on clothes, books, and baby items to another family, charity, or even donate suitable items to our nurseries for creative play.
- Food swaps: Plan meals for the week and involve children in writing the shopping list. This reduces waste and teaches life skills.
- Eco lunchboxes: Use refillable bottles, beeswax wraps, or silicone bags instead of single-use plastics.
- Toy rotation: Rather than buying new toys, rotate the ones children already own or swap with friends.
How you can make a impact:
Every time you reduce waste at home, you’re showing children the value of mindful living. So, celebrate those small wins! Whether it’s packing a reusable water bottle or saving leftovers for tomorrow’s lunch, each choice matters. Together, these habits create a powerful impact.

We believe reducing waste isn’t always about big, dramatic changes. Instead, it’s about thoughtful, everyday habits. When children see these habits at nursery, they grow up understanding the importance of caring for their world.
