Spot the Symbol: Helping Your Child Understand Fairtrade at Tops

At Tops, we believe in the power of small actions to teach children important values like fairness and kindness. This World Fair Trade Day, we’re highlighting a simple yet meaningful way to help children understand the concept of fairness: by teaching them to spot the Fairtrade symbol.

While we use everyday moments at the nursery to introduce children to the idea of fair trade, parents can also play an important role in helping their children recognize this symbol and understand its significance at home.

What Is the Fairtrade Symbol?

The Fairtrade symbol is a simple logo that represents a commitment to fair wages, ethical working conditions, and sustainable farming practices. When children spot this symbol, they can learn that the product is made by someone who was treated fairly, paid properly for their work, and supported in ways that allow them to thrive.

By helping your child recognise the Fairtrade symbol, you’re introducing them to the idea that the choices we make can impact people around the world, in ways that are positive and fair.

Spotting the Symbol in Everyday Life

One of the easiest ways to start is by pointing out the Fairtrade symbol during mealtimes or while grocery shopping. When you bring home a Fairtrade-certified product — like bananas, chocolate, or coffee — take a moment to show your child the logo and explain what it means. For example, you can say, “Look, this banana has the Fairtrade logo! “That means the farmer who grew it received fair payment for their hard work.”

Along with food, you’ll also find the Fairtrade logo on clothing and household products. Encourage your child to spot it on labels and explain how these products are made with fairness in mind, considering both the workers and the environment.

Why It Matters

Children learn best when they understand the ‘why’ behind things. So, as you point out the Fairtrade symbol, take a moment to explain in simple terms what it stands for. It’s not just a logo; it represents fairness, respect, and kindness.

By introducing these ideas early on, you’re teaching your child to think about fairness in everyday choices and how those choices can help make the world a better place.

It helps them develop empathy and an understanding of the bigger picture, where fairness matters not just at home but in the wider world.
