On Thursday, 15th August, Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan took time out of his busy schedule to visit Tops Day Nurseries in Southsea, offering a first-hand look at the incredible work being done by the dedicated team at the nursery. This visit was an opportunity for the MP to witness the vibrant atmosphere, observe the self-serving practices encouraged during mealtimes, and engage directly with the children and staff.

A Warm Welcome and Nutritious Meals
During his lunchtime visit, Stephen Morgan was warmly welcomed by Cheryl Hadland, Founder of Tops Day Nurseries. The nursery was buzzing with the lively chatter of children enjoying their meals, and the MP joined them, engaging in conversations about their lunch—a delicious and nutritious spread of chicken and black bean tacos with tomato and avocado salsa. The experience highlighted the Top’s commitment to providing high-quality meals, prepared by our own catering team, we pride ourselves on delivering nutritious and appealing food to the children.

Engaging Discussions on Early Years Education
Beyond the lunch table, Stephen Morgan engaged in important discussions with Cheryl Hadland and the nursery colleagues. These conversations touched on the critical role of the Early Years sector in Portsmouth, with a particular focus on the upcoming expansion of funded childcare spaces set to roll out in April 2024. The discussions also covered the benefits of the Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) for the nursery, a model that aligns with our nursery’s commitment to sustainability and community-focused care.

Speaking about the visit, Cheryl Hadland emphasised the importance of advocating for the needs of children, stating, “Children do not have a vote, and need us all to represent them and their needs for the future, so it was great to be able to share our concerns for them with Stephen Morgan.”
Commitment to Supporting Families
Stephen Morgan, reflecting on his visit, expressed his admiration for the work being done at Tops Day Nurseries. “I was delighted to visit Tops Day Nurseries in Southsea again to see the work they are doing to support children and families here in Portsmouth,” he said. “It was a pleasure to speak with staff, children, and Cheryl to hear their thoughts, concerns, and ideas for how we can improve the learning experience of local children and their families.”
