Supporting Strong Foundations for Learning at Tops Day Nurseries

At Tops Day Nurseries, we understand that the early years are crucial for building the skills children need for lifelong learning and wellbeing. With growing concerns that more children are starting school without basic independence, our nurseries focus on supporting strong foundations for learning rather than simply preparing children for school.

Building Confidence, Independence, and Emotional Security

Across our nurseries, Tops prioritises children’s confidence, independence, communication, and emotional security. We know that children thrive when they feel capable in everyday life, and our approach ensures that practical life skills are developed naturally.

Some of the key elements of our approach include:

  • Potty teaching from an early stage: Using reusable nappies and potty pants, we support children once they can sit independently, contributing to an average reduction of around eight months in the age children become toilet trained.

  • Screen-free, hands-on learning environments: Children engage in real-life experiences that foster exploration, curiosity, and problem-solving.

  • Daily routines that promote independence: From putting on coats and managing belongings to washing hands and tidying away, children learn to take responsibility in a safe, supportive setting.

Mealtimes as Learning Opportunities

At Tops, mealtimes are more than just food. They are calm, sociable moments where children:

  • Sit with adults and practise table manners

  • Try a variety of nutritious foods

  • Develop language and social skills through conversation

These everyday experiences help children build confidence, patience, and communication skills, essential foundations for future learning.

Communication and Language Development

Our practitioners place a strong emphasis on communication and language throughout the day. Using rich vocabulary, storytelling, songs, and back-and-forth interactions, children develop attention, understanding, and confidence, key ingredients for success in school and life.

“For us, this is not about pushing children into formal learning earlier. It is about giving them the confidence, independence and emotional security that allow learning to flourish naturally. When children feel capable in everyday life, everything else becomes more accessible.”
— Diane Wycherley, Chief Operating Officer, Tops Day Nurseries

Partnering with Families

We believe that strong partnerships with parents are essential. Tops provides practical guidance to support independence and routines at home and works closely with families to identify and address any additional needs early.

By combining high-quality early years environments, skilled practitioners, and supportive family partnerships, Tops helps protect childhood while giving children the best possible start in life.
