Residents at Southbourne Beach Care Home enjoyed a special World Book Day celebration when they were joined by children from Tops Day Nurseries: Pokesdown, alongside a visit from Tom Hayes, MP for Bournemouth East.
The heartwarming event formed part of Tops Day Nurseries’ “Joining Generations” initiative, a programme designed to bring young children and older residents together. By encouraging shared experiences, the initiative helps build meaningful relationships between generations while strengthening community connections.
Celebrating World Book Day Through Storytelling
During the visit, Tom Hayes MP delighted both children and residents by reading the beloved children’s classic Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
The storytelling session created a warm and joyful atmosphere, with laughter and smiles shared throughout the room. Children arrived dressed in creative World Book Day costumes, adding to the excitement and bringing favourite characters to life for residents.
Events like these highlight the power of storytelling. Reading together not only supports early childhood development but also provides older residents with opportunities to reminisce, connect and enjoy the magic of well-loved stories.
The Joining Generations Initiative
The Joining Generations programme regularly brings children from Tops Pokesdown together with residents at Southbourne Beach Care Home.
Through activities such as reading, arts and crafts, and shared celebrations, the programme helps to:
-
Reduce loneliness among older residents
-
Encourage communication and social interaction
-
Build empathy and confidence in young children
-
Strengthen connections within the local community
These intergenerational experiences create lasting memories while demonstrating the positive impact of bringing different age groups together.
