Tooth brushing programme at Tops Day Nurseries

To support Public Health England’s recommendation, we are very pleased to be introducing a tooth brushing programme into all of our nurseries from September 2016. The programme will be offered to all children from the sign of their first tooth.

Did you know that 27% of children will have tooth decay by the time they are 5 years old?  This can so easily be prevented, and health experts are questioning why the rates of the disease in children aged three to five are so worryingly high. In an attempt to lower the number of children hospitalised with the problem, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recently called for nurseries and schools to play a bigger part in facing the problem.

All children taking part in this programme will brush their teeth at the setting at least once per day using fluoride toothpaste. We will be teaching the children how to brush their teeth effectively and independently and monitoring the length of time the children are brushing their teeth (2 minutes).

The nursery will provide the toothbrushes, which will be replaced every 3 months, toothpaste and storage containers.

In other parts of the United Kingdom this approach has shown to improve children’s oral health significantly. Children have become enthusiastic about brushing their teeth at home too, and we sincerely hope this will also be the case with your child.
