Can you tell us a little about yourself and your journey In early years?

I first started working in Early years when my second son started Pre-school in 1989. I went from a casual helper to manager of a committee run pre-school, secretary and Chairperson of Havant Pre-school Learning Alliance, which I managed for 17 years. When my children did not need me during the holidays I went to work briefly for the NHS, speech and language, running Sure start programmes, baby talk visits, come and sing and nursery narrative sessions in Pre-schools. From then I worked as junior activities and creche manager, and started up a holiday camp at Roko Health Club (now Pompey Health and Fitness). A nursery was then set up, which I was employed to manage, First Steps which I went on to manage for over ten years before it was then taken over by Tops in 2019.

How long have you been part of the Copnor Nursery team, and how has your role developed over time?

It was 2019 when I started my Tops journey, running a 35 place nursery. The nursery has been well attended and popular, and has given opportunities to work alongside others throughout the company. Managing at other sites, especially over the Covid times. I have received an operational award  for Finance and Inspirational manager of the year.

What first attracted you to working in early years?

To be around children, helping them feel supported in their play and learning and being able to help them develop into kind, inquisitive, confident and independent children

What would you say has been your proudest moment so far?

Watching the children during their graduation and returning in their school uniforms.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

The variety, no day being the same. As an open plan setting, being able to see and hear the children all around me, and to share with parents .

How do you support children, families, and colleagues in your day-to-day role?

I support children, families and colleagues by building strong relationships and maintaining open communication. I regularly share updates and celebrate children’s learning through Facebook and Eyengage, ensuring parents feel involved in their child’s nursery journey. I also hold Parent consultation meetings and parent-child events that provide valuable opportunities to strengthen partnerships with families, discuss children’s progress and create a welcoming community where everyone feels supported.

Is there a particular project, event, or milestone you’re especially proud of?

Nurturing my children during Cooking school. Teaching them a love of cooking and understanding nutrition and balanced diet.

What motivates you to keep developing in your role?

The children’s engagement in activities, parent comments, Resonate surveys, audit/OFSTED

What advice would you give to someone starting a career in early years?

It is hard work, but, so rewarding that you are making a difference and are an important part of a child’s development.

How would your colleagues describe you?

My colleagues describe me as someone who makes the Copnor nursery feel homely, welcoming and friendly to new people. I like to put people at ease, and being an older person running an established setting, as well as having been here for so long, I think families and colleagues find that reassuring. I’m also very giving and always happy to support those around me.
