Tops Day Nurseries Pokesdown, located on Wolverton Road in Bournemouth, welcomed the Year of the Fire Horse in spectacular style with a vibrant Chinese New Year celebration for children and colleagues.

As part of the celebrations, the nursery was delighted to host a special performance from Julia of the Bournemouth Chinese Dance Troupe – DACEM, bringing authentic cultural dance and tradition directly into the setting.

A Cultural Celebration for Children in Bournemouth

The children were captivated by the graceful and colourful Chinese dance performance, watching traditional movements and learning about the meaning behind the celebration. The experience didn’t stop there, children were invited to join in with their own dance moves and even try on traditional Chinese outfits.

The nursery was filled with excitement as children immersed themselves in the cultural experience, exploring music, movement and tradition in a fun, age-appropriate way.

Chloe Boon, Deputy Manager at Tops Pokesdown, said:

“We were so excited to welcome Julia from the Bournemouth Chinese Dance Troupe – DACEM to celebrate Chinese New Year with us. The children had a wonderful time watching the dances, joining in, and trying on traditional Chinese costumes!

Here at Tops Pokesdown, we believe it’s so important to give children opportunities to explore and experience celebrations from around the world. Activities like this really help children develop an understanding and appreciation of different cultures.”

Supporting Early Years Learning Through Cultural Experiences

At Tops Pokesdown, celebrating international events like Chinese New Year supports the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) by helping children:

  • Develop an understanding of the world

  • Build respect for different cultures and traditions

  • Strengthen confidence through creative expression

  • Engage in hands-on, sensory learning experiences

By welcoming local cultural organisations into the nursery, children gain meaningful, real-life experiences that broaden their awareness beyond the classroom.

A Commitment to Global Awareness in Early Years Education

As part of the wider Tops Day Nurseries family, Tops Pokesdown is committed to fostering global awareness, diversity and inclusion through joyful, hands-on learning opportunities.

The Chinese New Year 2026 celebration was a wonderful example of how community partnerships can enrich children’s experiences and bring cultural learning to life in a memorable way.

From everyone at Tops Pokesdown — Happy Chinese New Year!
We wish our families and the wider Bournemouth community prosperity, happiness and good health in the Year of the Fire Horse. 💚
