Tops Day Nurseries Lakeside are delighted to have recently achieved the ‘Plastic Free Approved’ status, as implemented by Surfers against Sewage.
Having already been recognised as one of the South’s leading eco-sustainable childcare providers, Tops Lakeside have been working on a number of objectives in order to gain their accreditation, including banning all single use plastic – cling film, carrier bags, food bags, and wet-wipes, replacing them with reusable containers, homemade wipes and other eco-friendly alternatives. Not only this, they have also been extremely proactive in promoting less plastic by writing to manufacturers to ask them about their plans to reduce waste and make their products recyclable.
The children’s council have been discussing ways in which we can recycle, and conducting area litter sweeps. The nursery have also taken part in local beach cleans in collaboration with Surfers Against Sewage, and have plans to do lots more.
Barbara Chaitoff, Nursery Manager at Lakeside is no stranger to the award, having also managed Tops Havant when they received their ‘Plastic Free Approved’ status in 2018, and were the first Early Years setting in the UK to do so!
Barbara said “Tops Lakeside are excited to have gained the Plastic Free Approved Status, and look forward to continuing to work proactively in partnership with Surfers against Sewage and Portsmouth City Council to expand our Plastic Free commitment within the community. Protecting our environment is something we endorse throughout the Tops Day Nurseries family, and is a passion of my own, so to be able to hold the plastic free status is fantastic”
