At Tops Day Nurseries, we are proud to support colleagues in developing their careers and expanding their knowledge to benefit children and families. One colleague who has recently taken this step is Lucy Pemberton, who has spent the past year completing her Early Years Teacher course through Equalitas while continuing to work full-time, as Deputy Manager at Tops Lakeside, onsite at Lakeside Business Park.

Balancing study, assignments, placement work and everyday nursery life was no small task, but for Lucy, the experience has been incredibly rewarding and has strengthened her passion for supporting children during some of the most important stages of their development.

Developing Knowledge and Leadership Skills

Throughout the course, Lucy developed her understanding of leadership and management within early years education, while also gaining valuable insights into supporting children with SEND and vulnerable learners.

Reflecting on her learning, Lucy said:

“The course has encouraged me to think more deeply about how we create inclusive environments where every child can thrive. It has strengthened my understanding of how important it is to support each child as an individual and ensure they have the opportunities they need to succeed.”

A New Perspective on School Readiness

One of the most influential parts of Lucy’s training was her school placement, where she was able to observe children transitioning from preschool into reception.

During her placement, Lucy noticed that some children can experience challenges as they move into a school environment, particularly when it comes to independence and confidence.

This experience sparked a particular interest in school readiness and highlighted that preparing children for school involves far more than academic learning.

“School readiness isn’t just about recognising letters and numbers,” Lucy explained. “It’s about helping children develop confidence, independence and the practical skills they need to feel secure and successful when they start school.”

Skills such as putting on coats independently, managing personal belongings, recognising their own name and following simple routines can make a significant difference to a child’s transition into reception.

Turning Learning into Action

Inspired by her research and placement experiences, Lucy is now looking at ways to further embed school readiness opportunities within nursery practice.

One idea being explored is the introduction of weekly school readiness challenges that children can complete both at nursery and at home with their families. By working together, parents and practitioners can help children build confidence and independence in a consistent and supportive way.

Lucy believes that strong partnerships between nurseries, schools and families are key to ensuring children have the best possible start.

“Starting school is a huge milestone for children and their families. By working together, we can help children feel confident, capable and excited about the next stage of their learning journey.”

Looking Ahead

Completing the Early Years Teacher course has been a significant achievement for Lucy and has further strengthened her commitment to improving outcomes for children.

Her experience has not only enhanced her own professional development but will also help shape future practice within the nursery, supporting children as they prepare for school and beyond.

Lucy is passionate about encouraging others to continue their professional development and would be happy to share her experience with colleagues who may be considering the Early Years Teacher course themselves.

At Tops Day Nurseries, we are delighted to celebrate Lucy’s achievement and look forward to seeing the positive impact her learning will continue to have on children, families and colleagues alike.
