There’s no better way to learn about caring for our planet than by getting stuck in!

Recently, the children at Tops Pokesdown headed to the Boscombe clifftops to mark National Beach Clean Up Day, rolling up their sleeves and getting involved in a local litter pick.

Armed with litter pickers and lots of enthusiasm, the children worked together to collect litter and help keep their local coastline clean, creating a safer and more enjoyable environment for the community and local wildlife.

The beach clean was a fantastic opportunity for the children to put their learning into practice and discover why looking after our environment is so important.

As they explored the area and collected litter, the children talked about the impact rubbish can have on our beaches, oceans and wildlife. They also learned that even small actions can make a big difference when we all work together.

“We are very fortunate to live so close to such beautiful beaches, and we feel it is important that children understand the importance of looking after and respecting our local environment,” said Chloe Boon, Interim Nursery Manager.

“The children enjoyed getting involved and working together to pick up all the litter discovered. It was also a great opportunity to talk about the impact litter can have on our beaches and local wildlife, and how small actions can help make a difference.”

For the children, it was a fun and meaningful experience and a great way to celebrate Beach Day while supporting their understanding of sustainability and caring for the world around them.

Sustainability at the Heart of Tops

The beach clean is just one of the many ways Tops Day Nurseries encourages children to develop a positive relationship with the environment.

Sustainability is part of everyday life across Tops, with children given plenty of opportunities to learn through practical, hands-on experiences. From reducing single-use plastics and growing fruit and vegetables to planting trees, using renewable energy and supporting environmental projects, children are encouraged to discover how their choices can have a positive impact.

Making a Difference in Their Community

For the children at Tops Pokesdown, the visit to Boscombe was about much more than picking up litter. It was an opportunity to learn, explore, work as a team and make a real difference to a place right on their doorstep.

The children thoroughly enjoyed getting involved and were proud to play their part in protecting the beautiful coastline they are lucky enough to have nearby. The beach clean is a lovely reminder that you don’t have to be big to make a big difference and sometimes, it just starts with two little hands and one piece of litter.
