We believe learning goes beyond the classroom. Recently, our children at Tops Pokesdown Nursery spent a special morning with residents from a local care home. And what better place than the beach to celebrate community and connection?
As part of our Joining Generations programme, we took the children outdoors for a beach day. Certainly, It was a perfect setting for laughter, play, and friendship.
The morning was filled with simple joys. Children and residents built sandcastles, collected shells, and enjoyed the sunshine. Above all, seeing them connect so naturally was uplifting. Age didn’t matter, only the smiles and shared moments.
We have partnered with Southbourne Beach Care Home for over three years. Every visit is uplifting. These experiences help children grow in empathy, confidence, and social skills. At the same time, the residents enjoy companionship, joy, and energy from the children.
Our Deputy Manager, Chloe Boon, said:
“It has been heartwarming to witness the journey shared between the children and residents, as well as the meaningful friendships that have blossomed over time. This shared beach experience not only supported the children’s development but also created joyful, lasting memories for both generations.”
Moments like these reflect our mission: growing minds for a greener future. They show how kindness, curiosity, and community can thrive together.
Intergenerational activities like this go beyond fun. It plays a vital role in children’s development. Spending time with older generations helps children build respect, understanding, and communication skills, while residents benefit from the energy, smiles, and love that only children can bring.
In fact, taking this session outdoors added an extra layer of excitement, giving everyone the chance to breathe in the fresh sea air, enjoy nature, and celebrate being together in a joyful space.
