Recently our Preschool children at our Wareham Nursery welcomed some very special visitors, Sophie and Sammie from MyDentist Wimborne for an engaging and educational session on oral health. The interactive visit helped children develop healthy habits while learning why looking after their teeth matters from an early age.
What the Children Learned
During the session, children explored different types of toothbrushes and learned the correct way to brush their teeth using small, circular movements. They also discovered which foods help keep teeth healthy and which should only be enjoyed as occasional treats.
A particular highlight was the chance to help brush the teeth of Maggie the Dragon. It was a fun, hands-on activity that made learning about oral hygiene memorable and enjoyable.
Why Oral Health Matters in Early Years
Promoting good oral health is a key requirement of the EYFS framework, and at Tops Wareham, we’re committed to helping children establish lifelong healthy habits. According to NHS guidance, parents should start brushing their baby’s teeth as soon as the first milk tooth appears (usually around 6 months) using fluoride toothpaste.
Key Takeaways for Parents
-
Brush twice daily for about 2 minutes with fluoride toothpaste (1,000ppm to 1,500ppm for children)
-
Use the right amount: a smear for under-3s, a pea-sized amount for 3+
-
First dental visit: by age 1 or within 6 months of the first tooth
-
Limit sugary foods and drinks, especially between meals
-
Spit, don’t rinse after brushing to let fluoride work effectively
Building Healthy Habits Together
At Tops Day Nursery Wareham, we believe in working closely with families to support children’s overall wellbeing. This dental health session aligns with our ongoing commitment to teaching children about healthy lifestyles, nutrition, and self-care.
A Big Thank You
We’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Sophie and Sammie from MyDentist Wimborne for such an informative and engaging visit. Their expertise and enthusiasm made learning about dental health fun and accessible for our Preschoolers.
