At Tops Day Nurseries, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword, it’s a commitment that shapes how we operate, how we support our communities, and how we care for the world around us.

As a certified B Corporation, we are proud to meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. But what does B Corp certification really look like in practice?

To explore this, we spoke with Sandy, our Data & Sustainability Manager, about her experience of the B Corp journey, the impact it has had on the organisation, and what comes next.

What Does B Corp Mean From the Inside?

For Sandy, B Corp certification represents something deeper than environmental initiatives.

B Corp encourages businesses to look beyond environmental actions alone. It considers the full picture, governance, colleague wellbeing, ethical supply chains and community impact, ensuring that organisations think carefully about how every decision affects both people and the planet.

The Reality of Becoming B Corp Certified

One of the most eye-opening parts of the process for Sandy was the level of detail required during certification.

“I was surprised by the amount of evidence needed for the whole process and what we are required to do to meet the minimum standard, which is actually a good thing.”

B Corp certification requires organisations to provide comprehensive evidence across multiple areas of impact. Policies, procedures, data and documented practices must all support the claims being made.

This thorough process ensures that B Corp status is credible and meaningful, setting a genuine benchmark for responsible business.

What’s Next on the Sustainability Journey?

Achieving certification is only the beginning. Sandy explains that the next stage focuses on strengthening how Tops sources products and works with suppliers.

“Our goal is to look closely at our purchasing and supply chain to ensure we are sourcing everything in a sustainable way.”

This involves reviewing suppliers, materials and partnerships to ensure they align with the organisation’s environmental and ethical standards, helping to further reduce impact and improve B Corp performance in the future.

Advice for Other Nurseries Considering B Corp

For other nurseries thinking about beginning their own B Corp journey, Sandy emphasises the importance of preparation.

“Look at what you need and ensure the evidence is collected as much as you can before you start, and get one dedicated person to help you check through it.”

Having clear documentation and a dedicated colleague overseeing the process can make certification far more manageable.

How B Corp Shows Up in Nursery Life

B Corp principles influence everyday decisions across Tops Day Nurseries.

“As Data & Sustainability Manager, I’m very aware of the sustainable journey that the company is on. There is room to grow, to educate and to be involved in our communities in a much more powerful way.”

From operational choices to community engagement, sustainability is embedded into how the organisation works and how children are introduced to environmental awareness from an early age.

A Case Study in Responsible Early Years Education

Sandy’s experience highlights how B Corp certification is more than a badge, it’s a framework that helps guide continuous improvement.

At Tops Day Nurseries, sustainability is woven into the culture of the organisation, and being part of the global B Corp movement reflects a long-term commitment to using business as a force for good — for children, colleagues, communities and the planet.
