World Cleanup Day is one of the biggest civic movements of our time, uniting 191 countries across the world for a cleaner planet. A goal that crosses borders and defies religious and cultural differences. On a single day volunteers and partners worldwide come together globally to rid our planet of trash – cleaning up litter and mismanaged waste from our beaches, rivers, forests, and streets. The day harnesses the power of people around the world to achieve incredible things by joining together. Its beauty lies in cooperation and collaboration.
Tops Day Nurseries believe in an environmentally sustainable and socially responsible world for all. There are many things we do on a day to day basis to ensure we are being sustainable in practice.
The world generates 2.01 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste annually, with at least 33 percent of that not managed in an environmentally safe manner. Waste blindness is a serious issue, some countries struggle with rivers of plastic, overflowing landfills, and some countries are simply blind to how the trash is created and where it is disposed of. World Cleanup Day is the most incredible human collaboration project where we fight for a waste-free and sustainable future. We need your help to continue our work to organise cleanups around the globe and engage every country! Also to help raise awareness about the global mismanaged waste problem and engage all the sectors to tackle this problem together.
During ‘Tops Cleanup Day’, we had the chance to take some of the children out litter picking. We collected all kinds of rubbish, including plastic bottles, straws, wrappers, and cans. All the rubbish went into compostable bags ready to dispose of correctly. During the clean-up, we discussed with the children why you shouldn’t litter and any ideas the children had for how the litter ended up there.
The Skill Mill Cleanup
For the Cleanup, Tops is working with the Skill Mill the UK lead, a multi-award-winning social enterprise which provides employment opportunities for young people aged between sixteen and eighteen. Employing only ex-offenders, to actively reduce reoffending whilst increasing engagement, participation, employability and educational levels of the young people to increase their life chances.
The Skill Mill we are a small dedicated team working to break the barriers to employment for young people with criminal records. We do this by employing young people in work caring for the natural environment. This activity has led The Skill Mill to be selected to lead the UK in organising World Cleanup Day. On the 17th of September this global civic action mass participation event will take place and push towards a cleaner world.
The British Airways Better World Community Fund has agreed to match funds raised to support the organisation of WCD this year up to £5000. Please help support this effort and make World Cleanup day 2022 the biggest yet.
