Net Zero and Tree Planting

Trees
As part of our partnership with Ecologi, we pledge to plant 1 tree for every child that enrols in one of our nurseries. In addition to this, we also pledge to plant a tree for all current employees and for every new colleague that joins us. Currently, there are almost 800 colleagues working for Tops, that’s almost a thousand trees planted straight away.
These trees will be planted in Madagascar, an island country in the Indian Ocean. The country is considered a biodiversity hotspot, and over 90% of its wildlife is found nowhere else on Earth. In recent years, vast areas of Madagascar’s original forests have been destroyed, displacing entire animal species and diminishing local people’s ability to farm and live on the land. Ecologi started supporting this project in 2021 and so far, the community have already funded the planting of over 48.4 million trees! Responsible for reducing 2.2 million tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere.
Carbon Offsetting
Alongside our tree planting project to help the environment, we are also purchasing a carbon-offsetting amount that is equal to the amount we produce as a company, this project has helped us achieve net zero as the remaining carbon we produce is being calculated and offset every month by the projects we are supporting.
We started this project in September 2022, and so far we have offset 122 tonnes of CO2eq which has funded 17 projects.
So…what projects are we supporting?
9.1 tonnes of CO2eq
has gone into Peatland restoration and conservation in Indonesia.
4.9 tonnes of CO2eq
has gone into generating electricity from landfill gas in Brazil. This project protects a habitat that is thought to be home to up to 10% of the world’s remaining Bornean orangutan population.
2.51 tonnes of CO2eq
has gone into protecting over 26,000 hectares of threatened rainforest in the Western Amazon.
3 tonnes of CO2eq
3 tonnes of CO2eq has gone into fuel-efficient cookstoves in Uganda.
3.42 tonnes of CO2eq
is supporting the wind power project in Thailand.
4.08 tonnes of CO2eq
has gone into distributing cleaner cookstoves in Kenya. This project will mean more than 2,400,000 tonnes of woody biomass are saved each year.
6 tonnes of CO₂eq
6 tonnes of CO₂eq has gone into funding the wind power project in Mexico. This project has educated over 1,000 children about the importance and value of nature.
3.5 tonnes of CO₂eq
has gone into capturing waste biogas for energy in Turkey. This project will avoid 30,153 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year.
2 tonnes of CO2eq
2 tonnes of CO2eq has gone into fuel-efficient cookstoves in Uganda.
6 tonnes of CO₂eq
has gone into funding the wind power project in Mexico. This project has educated over 1,000 children about the importance and value of nature.
12 tonnes of CO2eq
has gone into a solar power project in Morocco, which prevents 33,775 tonnes of CO2e emissions each year.
13 tonnes of CO2eq
is going into generating renewable wind energy in Brazil.
6.92 tonnes of CO₂eq
has gone into the protection of the matavén forest in eastern Colombia.
9.06 tonnes of CO₂eq
has gone into solar PV electricity generation in Indonesia.
0.45 tonnes of CO2eq
has gone into generating wind power in the United States.
3 tonnes of CO₂eq
has gone into protecting forests in Paraguay. This project will prevent the emission of tCO₂e annually
5 tonnes of CO₂eq
has gone into turning waste into clean energy in Turkey. Preventing an average of {{858,714}} tonnes of CO₂e emissions each year.
2 tonne of CO2eq
has gone into avoiding methane emissions from landfill in Brazil. This project is expected to produce 102579MWh of energy during its lifetime.
